REMEMBER THE DEAD AND FIGHT FOR THE LIVING
Every 24th April we commemorate the anniversary of the Rana Plaza tragedy, an act of corporate homicide that resulted in the deaths over over a thousand people, caused by the exploitative practices of the global garment industry.
While there have been some changes made since that fateful day in 2013, the exploitation of workers continues. On this, the twelfth anniversary, as part of the Rana Plaza Solidarity Collective with Labour Behind the Label, War on Want and Remake we presented the Bangladesh High Commission in London with an open letter signed by 400 campaign groups, charities, trade unions and civil society leaders demanding urgent labour reforms from the Bangladeshi government.
Last year, the Bangladeshi government issued 44,000 unnamed arrest warrants in response to workers’ protesting for a fair minimum wage – to create a climate of fear & stop workers’ unionising.
A people’s uprising in Bangladesh in 2024 unseated the authoritarian government, creating a unique opportunity to implement workers’ demands for justice. The interim government must act now and champion workers’ rights.
