Meet the Trade Union Leaders
Fighting Burma’s Military Dictatorship
On Saturday 20th April No Sweat co-hosted a special afternoon of discussion about the latest situation in Myanmar where we heard from Burmese trade union organisers, both in person with Khaing Zar Aung, president of the Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar, and on the ground with union leaders and activists from several different secret locations in Burma and northern Thailand via Zoom, discussing what they are doing to fight for workers rights and restore democracy.
We also heard from Jay and Laura from the Myanmar Military Never in Fashion campaign; Maria Exall, former President of the TUC; Jeremy Corbyn, founder of the Peace and Justice Project; and Dr Maung Zarni an Burmese human rights activist and an expert on the genocide against the Rohingya.
STAND UP FOR MYANMAR
No Sweat Comedy Night
In the evening after the conference we headed over to our favourite night spot, London’s iconic 100 Club for a special comedy benefit gig in aid of Myanmar’s trade unions.
With performances from the legendary Mark Thomas, as well as the multi-talented Susan Murray, and the seasoned politically charged gag merchant, Don Biswas it was a fantastic night.
But, what stole the show was a special live conversation between author of The Anti-Capitalist Book of Fashion, Tansy Hoskins and Burmese trade union leader (and former garment worker) Khaing Zar Aung.
